FAQ

Calculator questions, answered

How ContainerLoadCalculatorX estimates cargo fit and container capacity.

How is space utilization calculated?+

Space utilization is the total volume of your fitted cargo divided by the container's internal volume, shown as a percentage. It reflects how much of the container's cubic capacity your shipment uses.

Why doesn't my full quantity fit even though there's volume remaining?+

Cargo fit depends on shape as well as volume. Boxes that don't divide evenly into the container's length, width, or height leave unusable gaps — this is normal in real container loading and is why the calculator reports a maximum fit per orientation rather than raw volume division.

Can I mix multiple cargo types in one container?+

Yes. Add as many cargo line items as you need. The calculator allocates container space across all item types proportionally, then checks the combined weight against the container's payload limit.

What happens if my cargo weight exceeds the container's payload limit?+

The calculator will cap the fitted quantity so total weight stays within the container's maximum payload, even if there's still volume available. Weight becoming the limiting factor before volume is common with dense cargo like metal parts, machinery, or fertilizer.

Should I choose a bigger container or split my shipment?+

If your cargo doesn't fully fit, compare containers in the results below. A larger container reduces per-unit shipping cost if you can fill it; splitting across two smaller containers can be cheaper if a single larger container would still be significantly under-utilized.
